RESEARCHERS TURN UP NEW ANTARCTIC PUZZLES
The mystery of what lies beneath the ice of Antarctica has, for years, been one of the most frequent themes of "Atlantis Rising Magazine." As recently as 2013, our November/December cover story "Lake Vostok's Secret Life" (AR #102) focused on newly discovered evidence for microbial life taken from ice cores above the massive sub-glacial lake. Some have argued that Vostok might still exist as a freshwater body, perhaps beneath a virtual atmospheric dome of some kind, preserved by geological heat from below. Now a new study in "The Journal of Geophysical Research" from geologists at Washington University in Saint Louis is providing seismological evidence for previously unknown geothermal heat sources beneath the ice sheet.
SATELLITES REVEAL IMMENSE LOST EGYPTIAN PYRAMIDS
Images found on GoogleEarth appear to show two, immense, and previously unknown, artificial Egyptian pyramids. According to the web site Ancient-Code.com, the newly discovered location contains a 620-ft-wide triangular plateau and two nearby pyramids. Larger than any known structures in Egypt, including the great Pyramid, the potential pyramids are starting to make news. If the discovery holds up, a substantial piece of Egyptian history may need to be rewritten.
GIANT SPIRALS FOUND AT ANGKOR WAT
Many recent archaeological discoveries seem to suggest that the ancient past we thought we knew, may be but the dying echo of a much deeper, broader, and, perhaps, grander history, about which we know virtually nothing. A case in point would be the recent mapping on Britain's Salisbury plain, on the site we call Stonehenge, of a vast temple complex dwarfing that monument and which is much older (see Frank Joseph's "The Startling Debut of Superhenge," AR #115). The latest case comes from Angkor Wat in Cambodia, where, using a new laser scanning technology called LiDAR, a massive and mysterious spiral ground plan has been unveiled.
REWRITING HISTORY AT CAPPADOCIA
Officials in Turkey's Cappadocia region now believe the exploration of vast and complex underground cities found in their region is going to lead to the rewriting of human history. Since their 2012 discovery, the astonishing sites have drawn attention from archaeologists everywhere. So far, over two hundred underground cities are reported but not yet fully explored. Many more likely await discovery. Recent digging has been under the guidance of archaeologist Semih Istanbulluoglu of Ankara University. In December, he told Turkey's Hurriyet Daily News, scientists believe the underground cities will date to before the Hittites in the second millennium BC, but said this remained to be confirmed.
PLANET X OR NOT?
In his 1975 best-selling book, "The Twelfth Planet," and its many sequels, the late researcher Zecharia Sitchin claimed that he had decoded from the ancient cuneiform tablets of Sumeria the story of a mysterious rogue planet which periodically (every 3600 years) approached the vicinity of Earth. Named 'Nibiru', the planet was populated, said Sitchin by a powerful, technologically advanced, race of giants known as the Anunnaki, which intervened forcefully in the affairs of Earth, accounting--Sitchin believed--for many of the anomalies of our planet's ancient history. Ever since publication of "The Twelfth Planet", legions of Sitchin acolytes have searched for evidence for the existence of Nibiru, also known as 'Planet X'. The release to the website of the Journal of Astronomy of Astrophysics, in December, 2015, of two Swedish papers has provided new fodder for the long-simmering debate over Planet X and fresh headlines around the world.
AN UNSUNG ARCHAEOLOGICAL HERO MAKES A COMEBACK
It is now clear that humans were in the Americas long before we have been taught that they were. Evidence from such widely scattered locations as Oregon, Florida, Chesapeake Bay, Brazil, and more, is piling up, and a once-unquestioned academic theory is in tatters. One of the first serious challenges to the Clovis Horizon hypothesis--that humans got here from Siberia about 13,000 years ago--has recently been revisited. In southern Chile, at Monte Verde, freshly uncovered evidence now suggests that controversial conclusions drawn in the 1970s may, if anything, have undershot the mark, and that human antiquity in the Americas could be far greater than even many cutting-edge experts have supposed.
FACING THE CHALLENGES OF BAD SCIENCE
Could most peer-reviewed science actually be wrong, and are we justified in not believing it? The answer, argued Epidemiologist John Ioannidis, in a 2005 paper published in the journal "PLOS Medicine," is 'yes'. "Why Most Published Research Findings Are False" was the sensational title. According to Dr. Ioannidis, the inherent bias of most researchers leads to many problems, including greed, sample sizes that are too small to produce reliable results, and the inappropriate exclusion of contradictory results. The problem is especially bad with psychology and the social sciences, but none of the sciences, even physics, is immune.
AN UNKNOWN MONA LISA UNVEILED?
An Italian researcher says he has uncovered a hidden under painting from Leonardo Da Vinci's painting of the Mona Lisa. That means, argues Pascal Cotte, that the face with the enigmatic smile we have been looking at for over 500 years is not the person we thought she was.
SEARCHING FOR ROYAL RUSSIAN DNA
Nearly a century after their murder, the mystery of the bodies claimed to be the family of Czar Nicholas II is expected to be resolved soon. The entire family of the last Russian monarch was assassinated in Yekaterinburg, Russia shortly after the 1917 Revolution. Bodies found nearby in 1991 were declared to be the family's, but the Russian Orthodox Church has never officially agreed to all the identifications. Now the bodies of Nicholasí parents, Czar Alexander II and his wife Maria Feodorovna, are to be exhumed for sample DNA which can be used to identify all of the family, once and for all.
SECRETS OF SOUND SURGICAL PRACTICE
Some believe that megalithic builders were able to use sound to levitate heavy stones. Such technology may be long forgotten, but someday soon surgeons could be able to operate using sound as a virtual scalpel. That is the implication of a new experiment conducted at the university of Bristol in England. Polystyrene beads suspended above an array of speakers can be made to levitate and to move in midair while guided invisibly, albeit, precisely.

THE QUEST FOR IMMORTALITY: ILLUSION OR REALITY?
By Jerry Decker
I've always been interested in the many legends about people claiming to be immortal but who have had the sense to keep it to themselves. So, since I prefer 'Pampers' to 'Depends,' I've been studying rejuvenation.
THE FORBIDDEN ARCHAEOLOGIST
THE UNEXPLAINED HUMAN FOSSILS OF SAVONA, ITALY
By Michael Cremo
Savona is a coastal town on the Italian Riviera, 25 miles west of Genoa. In 1852, some nuns, the Sisters of Mercy (Figlie di Misericordia), wanted to build a church next to their convent in the center of town. When the foundation for the church was being dug, Antonio Brilla, a local artist, assisted in the excavation and was also careful to look for fossils.
SECRETS OF THE CAROLINA BAYS
The Untold Story of the Younger Dryas
By RALPH ELLIS
There is an enduring mystery from prehistoric North America, involving geology, astronomy, climatology and zoology. Unraveling it could tell us a great deal about our world, its history, its climate, its vulnerability, and possibly even our future.
DID THE RUSSIANS FIND ATLANTIS?
It Could Be Time for a Fresh Look at Forgotten Reports
By FRANK JOSEPH
Thirty-eight years ago, steel leviathans silently, invisibly stalked each other in the dark, lightless depths of the North Atlantic with nuclear-warhead torpedoes. More than once, their near-miss encounters almost made of the Cold War a hot one, and unofficial accusations of submarines on both sides deliberately sunk with all hands, are still around, nearly four decades later. Into this fearsome arena and time, stealthily cruised the Moskovsky Universitet, ostensibly a research ship, as her scholarly name was meant to suggest.
JUNK DNA OR NOT?
Could the Genetic Material the 'Experts' Rejected Have a Purpose, After All?
By BRENDAN MURPHY
The vast majority of our DNA "text" is not used in the coding of proteins and enzymes--it is noncoding--and scientists generally have no idea of what its purpose might be. Thus, in their infinite wisdom, they initially dubbed it 'junk DNA.' How much of our DNA is junk? About 95-98 percent--rather a lot of waste for Nature to hang onto, I think you will agree (some scientific estimates go as high as 99%). Since it is not responsible for constructing our basic physical form, its purpose has remained mysterious to conventional mindsets, until very recently. We now know that a large portion of that 'junk' DNA is made up of mobile genetic elements (transposons and retrotransposons) or 'jumping DNA,' which can rewrite and activate--or deactivate--certain genetic codes. Jumping DNA reportedly makes up as much as half of the total DNA nucleotides.
THE OTHER SIDE
Shroud of Turin
The Mysteries Grow Deeper
By PATRICK MARSOLEK
The Shroud of Turin is a controversial and enigmatic Christian artifact that may be the only physical object remaining from Jesus' life. The Shroud was on display in the cathedral in Turin, Italy in 2015 for the first time in five years. At its last showing in 2010, more than two million people personally viewed it, and images were broadcast worldwide. According to Christians, this fourteen-foot-long, linen shroud is direct evidence of a central tenant of Christianity, the resurrection. Photos of the image on the Shroud--a bearded man lying in repose complete with wounds and bloodstains--was first shown to the masses in 1898.

Big-Power Politics Then & Now
By STEVEN SORA
The Shroud and its dating has presented the Roman Catholic Church with many problems, political and otherwise. Problems with dating the burial cloth of Jesus may be one reason the Church rarely speaks of it in public, and then does so only in ambiguous terms, but it is not the only one.
THE INTOLERANT CHURCH OF SCIENTISM
How Well Has It Earned the Adulation It Asks of Us?
ByWILLIAM B. STOECKER
In the 1950s the media never tired of telling us all about the wonderful world of the future. In 1955 there were television specials about what life would be like in 1965, 1975, and beyond. There would be teardrop-shaped, gas turbine cars, electric monorails, gleaming cities with futuristic architecture, atomic power so cheap that it would not even be metered, an end to all diseases, including aging, huge space stations with spin-induced gravitation, bases on the Moon, manned flights to Mars, and so on. As late as the first manned Moon landing in 1969, many scientists and engineers confidently predicted that we would send people to Mars in the 1980s.
THE POWERS OF MEDITATION
Just How Far Can Your Mind Take You?
By JOHN WHITE
Life on Planet Earth is threatened from many directions; many responsible sources warn of this. There is the possibility of nuclear, chemical, and biological warfare by the superpowers. There is worldwide pollution of the air, land, and sea by all nations. Nonrenewable resources--topsoil, water, various minerals, tropical rain forest, and the ozone layer, for example--are being wasted or destroyed. Overpopulation is straining the biosphere, bringing drought and pestilence.

MAGICAL EGYPT 2
VIDEO PRODUCTION LEADS TO STARTLING DISCOVERIES Ancient Art Reveals Surprising Secrets
By CHANCE GARDNER
Ancient Egypt is like a magic book--it speaks to you in your native tongue. To the stoneworker, Egypt speaks in the massive size of the stones and structures; to an engineer, it speaks through the mathematical precision and the perfect alignments; to the astronomer, it speaks in a precise language of celestial mechanics. To artists, it speaks in aesthetics. Through its art and architecture, it demonstrates the same inexplicable genius that it does in its other cultural expressions.
THE LOST ARTS OF LEVITATION
Can Overcoming Gravity Be Simpler than We Thought?
By STEVE RICHARDS
The fact that science cannot explain gravitation means that science cannot condemn levitation. So there is nothing unscientific about the occultist's claim that man can rise into the air through 'mere intention.' And that changes the character of our original question. It is no longer can man fly? but does man fly? And the evidence is that he probably does. Occasionally.
TREK TO THE PLANET VULCAN
Could Dark Matter or Dark Energy play a part in explaining a mysterious hidden planet spoken of in esoteric lore?
By Julie Loar
For a time, Vulcan was a small planet, or large asteroid, proposed to exist between Mercury and the Sun. Its astrological significance is still part of esoteric astrology, having a deep and hidden relationship to the sign of Taurus, the Bull. Attempting to explain peculiarities in Mercury's orbit, nineteenth century French mathematician Urbain Le Verrier hypothesized that these anomalies were the result of another planet, which he named Vulcan after the Roman god of fire.
